Types of Student Doulas Student doulas are studying to become either "Birth doulas" or "Postnantal doulas" and may one day become both. When selecting a student you may wish to choose one who is studying one of these categories. Below is a quick explanation of the two types of doulas. Please note a student may have none or limited practical experience and may only be able to provide a limited version of the services detailed below.
Birth doulas Birth doulas usually provide 2 to 4 antenatal visits (they come to the woman’s home before the baby is born) to assist the client to complete an individual birth plan and to share information with them. During labor they support the woman at home until they are ready to go to their chosen place of birth. The doula will then offer support until after the baby is born.
Postnatal Doulas Postnatal doulas provide a variety of packages for their clients. Support usually starts as soon as the woman returns home with her new baby. Some postnatal doulas will also provide a night support service, meaning they stay at the home during the night (to enable the client to get some much needed sleep). Exact details of postnatal services offered, can be discussed with the doula before hiring them.
