What is a doula ?
Any woman, interested in child birth, may become a professional doula. Doula courses are offered at institutions or by correspondence. Most women considering a career as a doula have had children themselves but this is not a prerequisite. A doula supports laboring women by attending to their emotional and physical comfort needs and assists in 'smoothing' the labor process. They do not have clincal responsibility but provide emotional, informational and physical support. They will also help their clients to research the type of birth they want.
What is a student doula ?

Doulas begin as student doulas. During their training they are required to attended three births as a student, in order to become familiar with the birthing environment. Students have basic theoretical understanding of doula services (as they are currently studying the theory of the doula profession) and can offer their services to laboring women, who may be looking for a doula but do not wish or need the services of a fully qualified doula (also students charge a small fee to cover their costs, and some may charge no fee at all)
